“Okay fine, you better find a dress,” she huffed dramatically before disappearing into the aisles of beautiful party dresses.

Kara ignored Jasper and started inspecting dresses on the hangers with a deep scowl on her face.

“Are we going to talk or just going to pretend as if we don’t exist?” he mocked.

She kept quiet and Jasper was getting impatient as he was not used to this kind of treatment. He was a control freak, and people listened to him and answered him whenever he demanded.

Kara just shook her head; exhausted and angry.

He was following her everywhere, and this side of Jasper was making her nervous.

He shoved a dress in her direction when she turned to shout at him after having enough of him following her.

  She startled at his action.

“Go, try this dress and end this misery for both of us,” he hissed at her.

Her anger rose and long series of insults were just on the tip of her tongue, but she bit back; she didn’t want to cause a scene in public.

She went to changing room, and tried that dress. It was beautiful with sweetheart neckline and full lace sleeves. Even without zipping it up, it hugged her waist perfectly and down the waist it had flowing skirt with a small train at the back.

She then tried to zip the dress but it didn’t budge. She huffed in annoyance. After struggling for a couple minutes she gave up and sat down on the small stool in the changing room.

She took her phone from her jean’s and dialed Amelia’s number.

“Amelia, get in the changing room now, I need your help with the zipper.” She cut the call after delivering her message without hearing her reply.

Kara stood up and unlocked the door when she heard a knock. Her head was hung down when the door opened and Amelia entered.

She sucked in a breath when she saw that it was not Amelia but Jasper who entered.

Jasper’s blue eyes bore into her wide green eyes. When his eyes trailed over her body, her hand went up to her neckline to secure the dress at its place. There was no emotion on his face, but Kara blushed deep. He gave in urge to roll his eyes and stepped closer. She was rooted to her place.

He placed his hands on her waist and turned her around. She was still and stiff in his hold. His hold tightened a bit and she looked up at their reflection in the mirror. Blue orbs clashed green ones, and a spark was felt by both when they saw themselves with each other in one frame.

There were myriads of emotions on Kara’s face, and Jasper’s face was void of any emotion. This was the first time when something twisted in her heart, she felt as if this was the place where she belonged.

Her chin trembled with each passing thought. Her life was playing in her mind like a broken record and she had no idea how to stop this.

Tears started to run down and Jasper was stunned when he saw her crying.

She was a real mess! Few minutes ago she was glaring at her and now she crying her eyes out. See this was why he didn’t like her; he had no idea what to do with this kind of girl.

He turned her around, both facing each other. He tucked a finger under chin and lifted her face up. They looked into each other’s eyes. There was something in her eyes which made Jasper to curse under his breath, and he pulled her in a hug. Was she shocked, it was an understatement. Hell, even Jasper was stunned because of his action.

They stood like that. His right hand encircling her tiny waist and the left one on her nape, burring his face in her crook. They were close; however, involuntarily, she moved closer as if it was possible. She sobbed in his chest, making a mess. His grey suit worth of thousands of dollars was going to be ruined, and in that moment he didn’t care about his expensive suit.

This whole situation was surreal. She in bridal dress, crying in the arms of her soon to be husband who was her brother in law just a month ago.

Never in million years they both had imagined them like this.

Jasper had never thought that one day he was going to feel something for a girl. And Kara had never dared to think of another man.

They were two stranger who were brought together by the cruel ways of the destiny. Or perhaps, in this moment, it didn’t seem that cruel. It felt right as if they found peace for the first time in their lives.

It felt like eternity in their tight embrace. A knock on the door jolted them out of their dream land. Kara looked here and there with pink cheeks, trying her best to avoid looking at him. But his sole focus was on her, observing each and every actions of her with tight jaw.

Knock sounded again, reminding them that someone wanted their attention. Before replying, she tried to free herself, but this brute was adamant not to let her go.

  “Kara, are you in there?”

Kara was mortified. It was Amelia on the other side of the door. How could she answer her sister when she was locked in the changing room with her soon-to-be husband, with her back exposed. And on the top of that they were still in each other’s arms.

And the fact that Amelia was already fangirling them, didn’t help either.

  Chapter 7

“Hello, Kara. Are you in this trial room?” Amelia asked again.

“Answer her,” Jasper gritted through his teeth.

“Answer her what? That I’m in this trial room with my soon-to-be husband,” she shot back angrily.

“Sounds legit to me,” he shrugged nonchalantly.

“I would never say that,” she narrowed her eyes at him, and struggled a bit to free herself from his grip.

There was a knock on the door again. Only then Jasper did let her go.

“Amelia, I’m in here. I’ll be out in five minutes. Just trying my dress on.”

“And…are you okay in there? I had been calling non-stop, and you didn’t answer soon?” Kara scrunched her nose on the suspicion in her sister’s voice– Amelia was trying to be an investigator thanks to their binge show marathons on various crime and mysteries shows during their sister bonding time.

“I’m fine honey. Ahmmm…the zipper got stuck. I’ll be out soon after changing.” She placed a secure hand on the neck of her dress since she was aware that she was not alone in the dressing room.

“Do you need any help? I can come in.”

Kara sucked in breath, and looked towards Jasper who apparently had a smartass grin on his handsome face; his eyes held mischief.

“No!” she shouted in panicked and mortified voice. “No, Am…it’s fine. I’m changing, anyway. You can go and check your dress.”

“No seriously Kara, I can help you with zipper.”

“Amelia Rose Smith, I told you that I’m fine, and I don’t need help. Why are you being so stubborn?” She said irritated.

“Okay fine, no need to be pissed, big sissy. I was trying to be a helpful and caring sister. It seems you don’t need one. I’ll be near the counter.” Amelia sounded dejected, hurt and pissed.

Kara winced at her tone before hiding her face in her hands. She groaned out loud. This was not her, she was never like this before. She was caring and selfless girl who thought about others, put her loved ones’ needs before her. This was all pregnancy hormones. She has to apologize to her sister.

Meanwhile, Jasper stood leaning against the door–in case Amelia or any other person decided to barge in this trial room. Although room was locked, he was being just extra careful.

“That was harsh!” he scolded her.

Kara stood there with sadness in her eyes, and it tugged at Jasper’s heart. The more he was in her company, the more he was intrigued by her.

“I know, I’m a bitch. Someone used to tell me.” She said in soft and broken voice as if she was remembering the times when she was being called bitch. Kara sucked in breath and looked away. Her brain was out of control and bitter memories were coming back. Unshed tears glistened in Kara’s eyes. She dabbed the corners of her eyes to stop the moisture from pooling down on her cheeks. Also, she knew Jasper would demand answers, and she was not ready to share t
he secrets that could ruin her and her both families–her and Jasper’s.

Jasper balled his fists. He sensed a mental abuse–which was done to her–in her words, and this was the discovery he was not ready to expect. He knew something was off with his fiancée; however, victim of any form of abuse was never in the options.

Being a lawyer, he heated mysteries, and this beautiful mystery standing in front of him in bridal gown seemed the most intriguing to him. He wanted to uncover every secret, fear, wish and dream of hers. And may be somewhere deep down in his heart, he also wanted to have her under him, in his bed–moaning and screaming his name.

He shook his head at the image of her lying naked in his bed. This was pure distraction, and didn’t want any. His life was already too much occupied, he couldn’t afford spending time thinking about him and her having sex.

Jasper inhaled deeply and looked straight behind her–in the mirror. There he saw a flash of something which had his mind reeling. The fact that he used to be in the U.S. Military for 5 years had given him the insights of abuse; both physical and mental.

He stepped closer to her, and she startled with his sudden movement. Kara clutched her dress tingly before backing away from him. Jasper put his one hand on her waist, and his other hand went to slide the dress away from her lower back to side.

Kara’s mind started to panic as he was extremely close to uncover something dark which she was not ready to share yet. She had to act fast or she’d to answer his questions; the answers which were full of shame and regret.

She backed away further and her back hit the mirror. Jasper also came closer, but before he could push the fabric away, she clutched his wrist tightly and pushed it away.

“What are you doing? You don’t have any right to touch me in anyway. And don’t ever come into my personal space,” she glared at him with little shaky voice. “And now get out of here. I need to change.”

By now her breaths were ragged, and face little flushed with embarrassment. Last thing she wanted was for Jasper to come closer to her past.

Jasper didn’t move; he kept looking at her with narrowed eyes and his lips pursed in thin line. Pure anger radiated from his frame, and it was not directed on her but her abuser. He knew people can be cruel but witnessing cruelty in real was never easy for him. Although he had built walls around him over the years but seeing Kara in fragile and vulnerable state was doing something to him.

“Please leave,” she said in barely audible voice.

Jasper stepped back still looking at her. He didn’t want to leave her, but her tear glistening eyes were pleading to him. With heavy heart, he turned around and went out of the changing room.

Door shut behind him, and tears started to run down on her face. She slid down on the floor. Silent sobs shook her body. She wanted to cry loudly; however, it was not a great choice now.

She place her hand on her stomach and smiled a sad smile briefly with teary eyes.

“I won’t let anybody harm you. Your mommy loves you, and she can’t wait to meet you”.

She stood up and wiped her tears. After composing herself she got out of the dress and quickly changed into her old clothes.

Luckily during whole this time nobody disturbed her. She took fairly 20-30 minutes in this dressing room–including when Jasper was here.

Taking that dress with her she went out to the counter. Amelia and jasper were there talking and laughing. Amelia hit Jasper on his biceps when he said something to her, but didn’t stop talking, and Amelia was getting both giddy and frustrated with him. She again went to punch him, but he ducked away, and held her hands. He genuinely laughed with her. When he was sure she’d hit him, only then he let her go. Then Amelia hugged him, and he stiffened for a second then circled his arms around her like a big brother.

Few memories assaulted her. William never did this with Amelia, and even Amelia didn’t spend so much time with him. She was usually busy doing her homework when William would come to their home. And her traitorous mind flashed one of the last brutal memories of her, William and Amelia’s. She inhaled deeply. It was not the time to go to that memory lane. She was tired and wanted to go home and have some food.

But before that she had to apologise to her baby sister. Probably sensing her eyes on them, they both turned to look at her.

Amelia’s smile fell and seeing this Kara’s heart bled. She bit her lip to stop the tears. She couldn’t see her Am like this.

She went closer and opened her mouth to apologise, but before she could do so a salesperson came to her and asked about the dress she was holding; whether she was going to buy or not.

“It didn’t fit me, sorry to waste your time. I’ll come some another time,” she said in low voice and handed the dress to the salesperson.

When she joined Amelia and Jasper, Amelia spoke before her, “Jasper, can we go now? I’m tired of this shopping. Please.”

  “Of course, let’s go.”

They went out of the boutique to the parking lot.

“And please drop me at my home,” she asked.

“What? Amelia we came in our car.” Kara reminded her sister.

“And of course. Drop her as well, she is in no condition to drive.”

“Hello, I’m not drunk. I can drive Am.”

“Don’t Am me. Besides, you are tired, this shopping really went long.”

  “Amel…”

“It’s ok Kara, I’ll drop you off. I came with Roger,” Jasper spoke to end this banter.

He didn’t want to witness them fighting when he completely knew that Kara was feeling guilty.

They reached to their respective cars and they were parked closer to each other’s. Jasper instructed his chauffeur –Roger– to take Kara’s car to her home and wait for him there.

Then he walked both the girls to his car.

And Kara looked at her sister but Amelia opened the door and sat in the car. Kara sighed and her shoulders sagged.

She had a long night ahead.

  CHAPTER 8

This car ride was seriously tense. Pin drop silence in Jasper’s SUV was pricking Kara. She sat in passenger’s seat, but instead of looking ahead she was constantly checking the front mirror to glance behind.

Amelia sat there with a cute scowl on her face. Absentmindedly, she was nibbling her lower lip–a habit she shared with Kara.

Jasper was aware of the tension between the sisters; however, he had no idea how to resolve their conflict. Although his big strong hands were on steering wheel, he was darting glances on both the girls in his car.

He loved silence, but silence was making him uncomfortable. His had his poker face on, but inside, he was screaming with frustration.

Do something. His mind scolded him.

He turned the radio on to fill the silence. It made him little better, but girls’ mood was far from better.

Think something else, you moron. His conscious poked again.

He started thumping his fingers on the steering wheel. His movements halted when a plan formed in his mind.

“Amelia, are you hungry?” he asked.

  “No, I’m starving.”

“So, what do you say, wanna eat somewhere?”

  “Really? You’d give treat?”

“Of course, I’d pay,” he chuckled at her looking in the front mirror.

  This made Amelia smile.

At least one of them is in slightly good mood, he thought.

“Okay then I’ll tell you where I wanna eat.”

“Sure, princess. Your wish is my command,” he bowed slightly which made Amelia giggle even more.

  “Aww!! My knight.”

“Where do you want to eat?” he asked.

Amelia put a finger on her chin pretending to be thinking. After a while she replied, “let’s go to McDonald's.”

“McDonald's? Are you sure, you don’t to want to go to this French restaurant?” he was amused with her answer.

He was actually trying to lighten her mood with a
ll the talks. It was not difficult for him to talk for endless hours; he learned it in his profession, and he was good at talking and scheming in the moments of crises. Probably that was the reason he became extremely successful during his initial six months of being a lawyer when he split open a high-profile case of a murder, bringing a state senator to his demise. Since then he became a name in law enforcement, and started getting high profile cases. Though, he pledged he wouldn’t represent any corrupt or guilty person.

“I feel bored in those places, and I have been to McDonald’s a few times with my friends. Jasper, you won’t believe, food is awesome. You would thank me later,” she cocked both her eyebrows at him while smiling with star struck face.

“Alright, we’ll eat at McDonald’s,” he agreed.

“Are you okay with this choice, Kara?” he asked Kara who was quiet the whole time, while turning his car towards McDonald’s.

“If Am is happy, I’m also fine,” she said in small voice. Hearing this Amelia snorted a bit before sulking into her seat with folded arms.

“Besides, we are already here,” Kara covered the situation quickly; she didn’t want to seem desperate sister who wanted to amend things with her little sister.

Jasper sighed, nothing changed. He shook his head and parked his car before getting out and taking girls inside

Jasper straightened his suit jacket, he felt completely out of his comfort zone, in his suit. There were normal people, not billionaires, who were having fun with their loved ones. It was not that he didn’t experience this environment. Actually, he did, but he was always in casuals like a normal guy. But today, he was wearing a dollar sign, and people were looking at him, especially few girls were giving him flirting looks.

He inched closer to Kara to give hint that he was taken. And this made Kara little alerted.

She was not ready to be close to him after all the incidents: last night’s ring incident and today trial room.

And on the top of that, her sister was pissed at her, and this feeling was eating her alive. She wanted to concentrate on apologising to Amelia, but how could she do when this handsome jerk was always around her.
